Characteristics related to biosafety
Central Asia, particularly the Tian Shan mountain region encompassing southeastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and western Xinjiang, China. Malus sieversii is native to the Central Asian mountain systems and occurs naturally in the wild fruit forests of the Tian Shan. Particularly extensive and diverse natural populations occur in southeastern Kazakhstan.
EN
The principal centre of genetic diversity of Malus sieversii occurs in the Tian Shan region of Central Asia, particularly southeastern Kazakhstan and adjacent areas of Kyrgyzstan and western Xinjiang, China. High levels of genetic and phenotypic diversity occur among and within natural populations. Studies of populations in Kazakhstan have identified multiple genetic clusters, with particularly high diversity and admixture in southern and southwestern populations.
EN
Malus sieversii occurs primarily in temperate montane forests of Central Asia, including wild fruit forests on mountain foothills, slopes and valleys. It can occur as a dominant or co-dominant forest tree. In the Tian Shan it is commonly reported at elevations of approximately 1,200–1,800 m, although its ecological range varies geographically. Populations occur under a range of environmental conditions, including relatively arid mountain habitats.
EN
Its natural distribution includes Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and western China (Xinjiang). Particularly important natural populations and remnant wild apple forests occur in southeastern and eastern Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and western Xinjiang, China.

Additional Information
The fruits of Malus sieversii are edible and exhibit extensive variation in size, shape, colour, flavour, sweetness and acidity. Some wild individuals produce relatively large and palatable fruits resembling cultivated apples, while others produce smaller or less palatable fruits.
Malus sieversii is an important genetic resource for apple breeding and conservation. Its germplasm is used as a source of genetic diversity and potentially useful traits, including resistance or tolerance to diseases and environmental stresses such as drought. The species has been used in breeding programmes for cultivated apple and in the development and evaluation of apple rootstocks. Wild germplasm is maintained in both in situ and ex situ conservation collections.
