Profile of the expert

Experienced Academic with 18 years research and teaching experience in a University. Ph.D in Medical microbiology. Research has included work on surveillance of antibiotic resistance in the One Health continuum. Work has focused on indicator organisms and some ESKAPEEc (Enterobacter, Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Acinetobacter baumaunii, Pseudomonasaeruginosa,Enterococcus spp and Escherichia coli) pathogens. Molecular methods have included PCR, gene sequencing, Whole Genome Sequencing, metagenomics & bioinformatics analysis. Characterization of medical and veterinary viruses using molecular techniques. Viruses worked on have included Foot and Mouth Disease Virus, Rabies Virus, Lumpy Skin Disease Virus, Newcastle Disease Virus, Infectious Bursa Disease (Gumburo) virus, Hepatitis B Virus, and Human Papilloma Virus and the SARS CoV 2. Experience with recombinant DNA technology. Experience with working in BSL1, BSL2 & BSL3 laboratories.

As Departmental Chairperson and a senior researcher in my university, l have been involved in creating and enforcing safety rules, including safe handling of pathogens, equipment, and waste disposal in our microbiology, biochemistry and biotechnology laboratories. Working with our technical staff l have been involved in exercises to identify, evaluate, and mitigate risks associated with biological materials. I have also been involved in conducting training sessions for first year students and new staff regarding laboratory safety, such as personal protective equipment. As Chairman/ Head of Department l had oversight in ensuring our laboratories adhere to Local and National safety standards.
