The Lchsp83 promoter is a regulatory element derived from the heat shock protein 83 (hsp83) gene of Lucilia cuprina. The endogenous Lchsp83 gene shows relatively high basal expression throughout development and is only moderately induced by heat shock. The Lchsp83 promoter functions as a strong constitutive promoter and has been used in transgenic calliphorid flies to drive high levels of gene expression.
In the genetic constructs of living modified flies (Cochliomyia hominivorax and Lucilia cuprina), it has been used to drive expression of fluorescent proteins that facilitate identification of individuals carrying the construct. The promoter does not encode a protein and functions as a transcriptional regulatory element.
