The HT1 protein-coding sequence encodes a Raf-like serine/threonine protein kinase associated with guard-cell CO₂ signalling. HT1 has been characterized principally in Arabidopsis thaliana, where it regulates stomatal opening and closure in response to changes in CO₂ concentration. Elevated CO₂ promotes interaction of MPK4/MPK12 with HT1 and inhibition of HT1 kinase activity, enabling activation of anion-channel signalling and stomatal closure. The corresponding barley protein is considered an HT1 homologue and is being investigated for its role in stomatal regulation, gas exchange and ozone uptake.
