The green fluorescent protein (GFP) is a protein that exhibits bright green fluorescence when exposed to light in the blue to ultraviolet range. The green fluorescent protein is an energy-transfer acceptor. Its role is to transduce the blue chemiluminescence of the protein aequorin into green fluorescent light by energy transfer. Fluoresces in vivo upon receiving energy from the Ca2+-activated photoprotein aequorin.

Green fluorescent protein has been extensively engineered to generate a wide range of color variants, fusion proteins, and biosensors. Targeted mutations enable emission at different wavelengths, while subsequent generations of mutants have yielded proteins with enhanced stability, increased brightness, and longer fluorescence lifetimes. As a result, fluorescent proteins and their mutant allelic forms have become ubiquitous tools for the construction of chimeric proteins, where they function as reliable fluorescent tags.
