The Government of Bangladesh has developed a standalone National Biosafety Policy 2024, considering the protection of biological diversity, human and animal health, as well as the environment, from the possible adverse impacts of using GMO/LMOs raised through modern biotechnology. The policy addresses the use of biotechnology to achieve the development goals outlined in the National Biotechnology Policy 2012. The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change is mandated to implement the National Biosafety Policy. The proposed policy has focused on the following areas to ensure biosafety in research, development, and any kind of commercial uses, with the wider participation of the public, making it more transparent and accessible.
The objectives of the biosafety policy are to adopt measures to ensure safe research, production, transfer, handling, use, export, import, and all other possible dealings with genetically modified organisms and products thereof, strengthen institutional, scientific and technical capacities of the country to deal with biosafety issues, develop high quality infrastructural facility for GMO detection and identification, enhance human capacity in different areas related to biosafety, implement the obligations of Bangladesh as a Party to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, take into consideration socio-economic and ethical issues in decision making process relating to biosafety, promote public participation, accountability and transparency in all matters relating to biosafety.
