In May 1994, the revised guidelines describe the biosafety measures that must be undertaken in India both for contained research activities and also for large scale open environmental release of genetically altered agricultural and pharmaceutical materials.

Guidelines
National / Federal
Objectives-The guidelines are in respect of safety measures for the research activities, large scale use and also the environmental impact during field applications of genetically altered material products.
Scope-1. The guidelines apply to research involving genetically engineered organism. The levels of the risk and the classification of the organisms within these levels based on pathogenicity and local prevalence of diseases and on epidemic causing strains in India are defined in the guidelines.
2. It also deals with rDNA technology in vaccine development and large scale production. The guidelines prescribe criteria for good large scale practices (GLSP) for using recombinant organisms.
3.Saftey measures with deliberate/ accidental release of organisms, plants, animals and products derived by rDNA technology into the environment. The guidelines prescribe the criteria for assessment of the ecological aspects on a case by case basis for planned introduction of rDNA organism into the environment. It also suggests regulatory measures to ensure safety for import of genetically engineered materials, plants and animals.
