Guidelines
National / Federal
The objective of the guidelines is to provide guidance on evaluation of safety of food and feed derived from GM crops. These guidelines provide technical guidance on the safety assessment process for food, feed, and products used as ingredients that are derived from GM crops. No attempt is made to explicitly define all the data that might be required during a safety assessment, as this may vary case-by-case, and generally, data and information requirements are applicable only to those crop parts used as a food and feed source.

The guidelines describe the recommended approach to making safety assessments of foods and feeds derived from GM crops in comparison to a conventional counterpart and identifies the data and information that are generally applicable to making such assessments. While this guideline is designed for foods and feeds derived from GM crops, the principles described, could be applied to foods and feeds derived from crops that have been altered by other techniques.

The approach is based on the Codex Alimentarius principles for Risk Analysis (RA) of foods and feeds derived from modern biotechnology and addresses safety and nutritional aspects of foods and feeds of, or derived from, crops that have a history of safe use as sources of food and feed and that have been modified by modern biotechnology to exhibit new or altered expression of traits. These Guidelines are intended to provide guidance to applicants, reviewers, and other stakeholders for regulatory purposes.
