Supertilapia is a hybrid tilapia (Oreochromis hornorum x Oreochromis aureus) modified for enhanced growth. The transgenic fish expresses an additional copy of the tilapia growth hormone to induce faster and increased growth in comparison to the wild-type hybrid tilapia. During development, it was observed that supertilapia grow roughly 82% larger compared to their non-transgenic counterparts.
EN
The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.

Some of these genetic elements may be present as fragments or truncated forms. Please see notes below, where applicable.
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-103749-1 Human Cytomegalovirus promoter | Human betaherpesvirus 5 (Human cytomegalovirus, HCMV, HHV-5)
    Promoter
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-103642-2 Transcription termination factor | Macaca mulatta polyomavirus 1 (SV40, Simian vacuolating virus 40, simian virus 40, Rhesus macaque polyomavirus)
    Terminator
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-103750-1 Tilapia Growth Hormone gene | Oreochromis hornorum x Oreochromis aureus (Hybrid tilapia)
Protein coding sequence | Changes in physiology and/or production (Growth rate)
  • BCH-GENE-SCBD-114748-3 SV40 poly-adenylation signal | Macaca mulatta polyomavirus 1 (SV40, Simian vacuolating virus 40, simian virus 40, Rhesus macaque polyomavirus)
    Terminator
The modified hybrid tilapia contains one gene cassette for the expression of Oreochromis hornorum x Oreochromis aureus tilapia growth hormone. The tilapia growth hormone coding sequence is under control of the human cytomegalovirus promoter and the Macaca mulatta polyomavirus 1 (SV40) terminator. The promoter additionally contains an enhancer and thus high levels of transcription from this cassette are expected.
