The commercial event Liberty Link was obtained by direct transformation of protoplasts from the He/89 corn lineage using polyethylene glycol (PEG) with the entire pUC/Ac plasmid containing the genetic elements of interest. The transformed protoplasts were cultured under selection conditions in the presence of the herbicide glufosinate ammonium, also known as L-Phosphinothricin. (PPT – Phosphinotricin) to give rise to cell clusters that were later regenerated to normal plants according to the protocol established by Mórocz et al.

Methodology and points to consider
There is no evidence of adverse reactions to the use of Liberty Link corn. For this reason, there are no restrictions on the use of this corn or its derivatives, whether for human or animal consumption.

Event T25 was tested in the field and in containment in the United States and Canada and the comparison between event T25 and non-genetically modified hybrid corn plants did not identify changes in agronomic traits that are outside the normal range of variability for traits such as yield, plant height, cycle, susceptibility to diseases and pests, yield components and others. In planned environmental releases conducted in Brazil, we also no alterations were observed in the agronomic characteristics of T25 maize that were outside the patterns found in hybrids and non-genetically modified maize lines. Thus, it is possible to assume that the insertion of the fragment described above into the maize genome did not alter its normal phenotypic characteristics.

None of the questions indicate that this corn may have adverse effects on human or animal nutrition.

The data presented by the applicant are related to the proximate composition, the profiles of amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins, in addition to the phytate content, both for the genetically modified variety, with and without the use of glufosinate, and for the conventional variety, cultivated under the same conditions and in the same region for the same period. Initially, results of analyzes conducted with plants grown abroad in two regions were presented. Subsequently, due to questions made by members of CTNBio, data were presented on plants grown in the country in different environments, in the states of Goiás and Paraná. These composition analyzes were carried out in the country by the Adolfo Lutz Institute, in São Paulo.

According to the applicant, the T25 event derives from the transformation of cells of the He/89 lineage of common maize Zea mays, a species characterized in depth and on which there is solid safety record for human and animal consumption. Information on the identity, origin and chemical composition is reported, and a copy of the publication that provides an abundance of data on its composition, highlighting the naturally observed variations in the presence of nutrients.

No problems were detected for human, animal or environmental health that could be attributed to transgenic maize. It is necessary to emphasize that the lack of negative effects resulting from the cultivation of transgenic corn plants does not mean that they cannot happen. Zero risk and absolute safety do not exist in the biological world, although there is already an accumulation of reliable scientific information and a safe ten-year history of use that allows us to say that T25 corn is as safe as conventional versions.
