The Biosafety Symposium 2025 Report captures the discussions of this event that was held on 21 August 2025 in Shah Alam, Malaysia. This event was organized by the Department of Biosafety (DOB) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) attended by 412 participants and experts from Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, and the United Kingdom. The symposium’s theme, "Strengthening Biosafety for Future Sustainability," focused on fostering regional collaboration, showcasing biotechnological research, and enhancing public awareness regarding biosafety. In this event, DOB announced a new strategic partnership with the Malaysia Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) to strengthen biosafety enforcement at entry points. Speakers from 6 countries shared Insights on Biosafety Regulatory Approach, Local Innovations and Public Engagement Initiatives highlighting regulatory mechanisms and updates, risk assessment approaches, local innovations and best practices on public awareness and engagements. This report also records the robust discussions that took place between the participants and speakers. A dialogue session entitled “With Great Technology Comes Great Responsibility: Genetically Modified Food from Farm to Plate” explored opportunities and challenges in GM food development, regulation and public acceptance. Participants discussed the balance between innovation and rigorous, science-based risk assessment frameworks. The event brought four recommendations for advancing biosafety governance: (1) Regulatory Updates:- Review and update national frameworks to remain responsive to rapid technological advancements. (2) Capacity Building: Invest in advanced detection technologies and human capital development to support effective risk assessment and enforcement. (3) Public Engagement : Strengthen public education initiatives to demystify biotechnology, counter misinformation, and build societal trust. (4) Regional Cooperation: Foster inter-agency and regional collaboration to harmonize practices and ensure integrated surveillance across borders.
