The Tobacco etch virus 5' leader sequence is a translational enhancer to promote expression of downstream sequences. The leader sequence functions in eudicots, but not monocots, and promotes cap-independent translation (mRNA transcripts lack a m7GpppN cap). However, it was noted that a poly(A)-tail must be present for the leader sequence to function.
