The 21 nucleotide sequence was derived from Zea mays gibberellic acid 20 oxidase 3 and 5 genes, which are involved in the production of bioactive gibberellins (hormones responsible for growth and development). The sequence shares a complete homology to gibberellic acid 20 oxidase 3, but differs from the gibberellic acid 20 oxidase 5 sequence by 1 nucleotide. Despite the 1 base difference, the miRNA sequence is still capable of suppressing the expression of gibberellic acid 20 oxidase 5. Silencing of these two genes results in reduced height as bioactive gibberellins cannot be produced.
