The cowpea (Vigna unguiculata) was modified to express the Phaseolus vulgaris alpha-amylase inhibitor-1 protein in the seed as a means of controlling post-harvest seed damage due to the bruchid Callosobruchus maculatus, known as cowpea weevil. Ingestion of the alpha-amylase inhibitor-1 protein interferes with the digestion of carbohydrates by binding the catalytic site of the alpha-amylase enzyme, which in turn leads to a reduction in the growth and survival of the feeding pest. The event, designated CSI32, contains a single T-DNA insertion and is "marker-free".
The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.

The modified cowpea contains one gene cassette for Phaseolus vulgaris alpha-amylase 1 inhibitor (aAI-1).
The aAI-1 coding sequence is under control of the P. vulgaris leucoagglutinating phytohemagglutinin promoter and terminator. Due to the seed-specific nature of the promoter, expression of aAI-1 is expected to be restricted to the cotyledon and seed tissues within the plant.

- Southern blot analysis indicated that the modified cowpea contained a single T-DNA insertion.
- During the initial transformation of the plant, a second T-DNA was inserted into the plant. The cassette inserted was as follows: Cauliflower mosaic virus 35S promoter (698 bp), Streptomyces hygroscopicus phosphinothricin acetyltransferase (552 bp) and Agrobacterium tumefaciens octopine synthase terminator. Subsequent breeding (genetic segregation) removed this cassette from the cowpea genome.
