FIAN International is an international human rights organization that advocates for the full realization of the human right to food and nutrition. It is operating through national sections and seed groups in around 25 countries in Asia, African, Europe and Latin America, and members and partners in more than 60 countries all over the world. Holding a consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, FIAN International works closely with the international human rights system through its International Secretariat (IS) based in Heidelberg with a permanent representation in Geneva. It is financed by state and non-state donor organizations as well as through its membership.
Biodiversity and biosafety are critical elements for the full enjoyment of the right to adequate food and nutrition as well as other human rights. FIAN therefore supports communities, organizations of small-scale food producers and indigeneous peoples in their struggles for access to and control over natural resources, agroecological food production that enhances biodiversity, as well as for policy and legal frameworks that effectively protect people from the risks and hazards of biotechnologies.
