The EU-RL CEFAO, former called CRL-ISS, is one of the European Union Reference Laboratories (EU-RLs). The tasks of EU-RLs are listed in the Art. 32 of Regulation 882/2004.
In particular, the EU-RL CEFAO focuses its mission on:
- the preparation of ad-hoc reference materials for Proficiency Testing for its relevant NRLs, and organizing a yearly workshop to discuss the results
- validating methods with the most widely used techniques in its field of competence (ICP-MS; Z-ETA AAS; FIMS; HG-AAS; ICP-OES and Direct Mercury Analysis)
- giving assistance to EU-NRLs in its field of activities
- organizing training courses for NRLs of candidate and third countries
Since July 2004, the EU-RL CEFOA has been accredited, as testing laboratory by the Swedish Board of Accreditation, Swedac in accordance with the recognized International Standard ISO/IEC 17025:2005. In March 2010 the EU-RL applied for the flexible scope for 17025 and for the accreditation as provider of proficiency testing schemes in accordance with the recognized International Guide ISO Guide 43-1 having a successful outcome.
