The Royal Scientific Society recognized the importance of developing a national experience for detecting GM products available in Jordan's markets. Accordingly, a Biosafety unit equipped with necessary facilities for detection of GM products has been established by the beginning of 2009. Between 2009 and 2010, the Biosafety unit started a screening program for detection of GM cereals derived products in the Jordanian market, and at the same time assessing and developing DNA extraction methods for various cereals products. The study revealed the presence of unlabeled GM maize and soy food and feed products in the Jordanian market. Accordingly, there is need for monitoring policy for the GM feed and food products and to investigate possible transfer of genetic events in the food chain.
