The main objectives of the UNEP-GEF Biosafety Unit are to:
a) assist countries in the establishment of national biosafety frameworks;
b) promote information sharing and collaboration, especially, at the regional and sub-regional levels; and
c) promote collaboration with other organizations to assist capacity-building for the Protocol.

Currently, UNEP-GEF is running three projects to implement the GEF strategy: a) A global Development project assisting 123 countries to develop a draft national biosafety framework (NBF); b) Implementation projects for Eligible Parties, with the objective of establishing operational national biosafety frameworks (NBFs); c) A Biosafety Clearing House project to assist parties countries to participate in and benefit from the BCH.
