NORCE is a new and forward-looking research institute, with expertise in a wide range of fields and strong communities of knowledge. We deliver research and innovation in energy, health care, climate, the environment, society and technology. Our solutions address key challenges for society and contribute to value creation on the local, national and global levels.
The institute has approx. 1000 employees, the largest research institute in Norway. The majority of the biosafety work is performed by the Gene-technology, Environment and Society Group (GEMS) and its major partners are UiT The Arctic University of Norway, The Federal University of Santa Catarina (Brazil), The German Agency for Nature Conservation (BfN) and The Environmental Agency Austria (Austria).

- NORCE - about us [ English ]
GEMS was formerly knows as GenØk-Centre for Biosafety before it merged to NORCE and it kept its status of National Competent Authority in Biosafety in Norway since 2007.
GenØk has been carrying out capacity building projects related to gene technology and gene modification in developing countries since 2003. In additional to the annual courses in biosafety, GenØk also has organised two regional courses, one credit-giving online course in biosafety (at the University of Tromsø), and published a book called Biosafety First with contributions from over 20 international biosafety experts: Biosafety First (2007) Traavik, T. and Lim, L.C. (eds.), Tapir Academic Publishers.
The new established group GEMS in NORCE continues to work with biosafety-related research and its publication can now be found in NORCE's webpages.
