The stacked soybean line MON-877Ø1-2 x MON-89788-1 was obtained through the traditional cross breading of each of the parental organisms to produce a soybean that expresses each of Cry1Ac and EPSPS genes. The expression of these genes are expected to confer resistance to Lepidoptera and tolerance to glyphosate herbicide.

The soy plant was modified with the insertion of the Cry1Ac protein which provides protection from feeding damage caused by targeted lepidopteran pests, such as primary target pests velvetbean caterpillar (Anticarcia gemmatalis), soybean looper (Pseudoplusia includens), soybean anxil borer (Epinotia aporema), and sunflower looper (Rachiplusia nu). The parental organism was also transformed with a second T-DNA cassette which contains a cp4 epsps coding sequence, however analysis has shown that this cassette segregated out of the LMO during the development process.

MON89788 is a second-generation glyphosate-tolerant soybean product, was developed by introduction of the cp4 epsps gene cassette consisting of a chimeric promoter sequence derived from Arabidopsis thaliana Tsf1 gene promoter and enhancer sequences and from the 35S of the Figwort Mosaic Virus.
