The eucalyptus (Eucalyptus urophylla) was modified for herbicide tolerance through the expression of Rhizobium radiobacter (Agrobacterium tumefaciens) 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (epsps). The bacterial enzyme does not bind the herbicide glyphosate with high affinity (unlike the endogenous EPSPS protein) and thus allows for the continued biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids through the shikimate pathway during glyphosate applications. In addition to the epsps cassette, the eucalyptus also expresses Escherichia coli neomycin phosphotransferase II, which was used for kanamycin selection during transformation.

    Terminateur
The eucalyptus contains two gene cassettes: Rhizobium radiobacter 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (epsps) and Escherichia coli neomycin phosphotransferase (nptII).

The epsps coding sequence is under control of a Cauliflower mosaic virus (CaMV) 35S promoter and R. radiobacter nopaline synthase terminator.

The nptII coding sequence is under control of a CaMV 35 promoter and terminator.

Due to the constitutive nature of the CaMV promoter, expression of EPSPS and NPTII are expected to occur at high levels.
