Moonvelvet is a flower colour modified carnation variety produced through introduction of the anthocyanin biosynthetic gene flavonoid 3',5'hydroxylase (F3'5'H) from Petunia hybrida to result in a violet/mauve colouration and the cytb5 gene to enhance the activity of flavonoid 3',5'-hydroxylase. A variant form of acetohydroxy acid/ acetolactate synthase (ALS) from Nicotiana tabacum was used as a selectable marker to confer tolerance to sulfonylurea herbicide.
Flowers of the transgenic plant produce delphinidin-related anthocyanins, not found in nature in carnation.

The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.
