Gypsophila modified for altered flower colour
EN
PAP1
No
Baby's Breath (Gypsophila paniculata; cut gypsophila) was modified to express Arabidopsis thaliana Production of Anthocyanin Pigment 1, conferring coloured flowers due to the accumulation of anthocyanin pigment in the vacuoles of the cells. The colour of the flowers was also noted to remain stable. The modified flower also contains an Escherichia coli neomycin phosphotransferase II cassette as a selectable marker used during transformation.
EN
The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.

Pigment production
Transcription of the Arabidopsis thaliana PRODUCTION OF ANTHOCYANIN PIGMENT 1(AtPAP1) occurs from the Cauliflower Mosaic Virus (CaMV) 35S promoter and terminates at the Agrobacterium tumefaciens optopine synthase gene terminator. High levels of AtPaP1 expression are expected due to the constitutive activity of the CaMV 35S promoter.

Selectable marker
Transcription of the Escherichia coli neomycin phosphotransferase II (nptII) starts from another CaMV 35S promoter and stops at the A. tumefaciens tumour morpholoigy large gene terminator. Similar to the AtPAP1 gene, high levels of transcription are expected to be achieved via the CaMV 35S promoiter.
