The inverted terminal repeats (ITR) of Adeno-associated dependoparvovirus A (Adeno-associated virus 2) facilitate the integration of a viral sequence into a host genome, rescue of pro-viral genome and serve as primers for AAV DNA replication. The ITR are 145 nucleotides in length. When used in recombinant vectors, the sequences randomly integrate into the host genome. Research has suggested that the ITR may also act as a promoter with transcriptional activity varying by cell type.
