The Environment Agency Austria is the expert authority of the Federal
Government for environmental protection and environmental monitoring in
Austria. The main tasks of the Agency are to provide an assessment of the state of the environment and of its changes and
pressures, the development of measures to avoid/reduce environmental pressures, to provide expert knowledge in planning and implementing environmental policy decisions and to contribute to the implementation and enforcement of environmental laws, e.g. in the area of living modified organisms.
Specialised environmental analyses in the agency's laboratories, e.g. GMO detection and analysis in the GMO-detection laboratory.

Environment Agency Austria is member of the European Network of GMO Laboratories (ENGL) established in 2002 and comprising more than 70 member laboratories of the European Union, Norway and Switzerland. The GMO Lab of the Environment Agency Austria is assisting the Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) of the European Commission, which is responsible the development of standardised testing protocols for use throughout the EU.
Experts of our GMO lab are assisting the further development of the ENGL network as steering committee members.
