Kyrgyzstandard and FAO Strengthen the Capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic in the Field of Biosafety

As part of the implementation of the agreement between the Center for Standardization and Metrology under the Ministry of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic (Kyrgyzstandard) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) on strengthening technical capacity and developing technical guidelines on biosafety in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety in the Kyrgyz Republic, a series of awareness-raising seminars was conducted.
The seminars took place on 17–20 September 2026 in Naryn, on 27–30 September in Talas, and on 4–7 October in Osh. Participants included government officials, farmers, agricultural producers, and other relevant stakeholders.
The main focus of the seminars was to strengthen institutional capacity for assessing the socio-economic aspects of biosafety, taking into account gender equality and social inclusion, in accordance with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Kyrgyzstandard experts provided participants with information on key aspects of the FAO project and discussed approaches to raising awareness among relevant stakeholders in this field.
In addition, participants received information on the exchange of information concerning living modified organisms (LMOs), as well as on the role of the Biosafety Clearing-House (BCH), an information platform that facilitates the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety. Particular attention was paid to the platform’s functionalities, its importance in ensuring access to relevant information, and its role in promoting international information exchange.
The seminars aimed to enhance participants’ knowledge and professional competencies, strengthen institutional capacity, and facilitate the exchange of experience in the field of biosafety.
The implementation of the project contributes to raising awareness among government authorities, representatives of the agricultural sector, and other relevant stakeholders, while also strengthening the national capacity of the Kyrgyz Republic in the field of biosafety in line with the country’s international commitments.
