Dr. Vimbai Samukange is a multidisciplinary biologist and biotechnology researcher serving as Director of the Biotechnology Research Institute and Head of the Agricultural Cluster at the Scientific and Industrial Research and Development Centre. Her expertise spans enzymology, molecular biology, genetics, and translational biotechnology, integrating fundamental science with applied innovation in health, agriculture, and industry.
She holds a BSc in Food Science and Technology from the University of Zimbabwe, and both an MSc and Doctorate in Agricultural Science from Kyoto University, where she researched Matrilysin (MMP-7) in cancer progression. She completed postdoctoral research at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology on the nmr-1 gene in C. elegans, and later conducted ageing research in Romania.
Her work focuses on synthetic biology, crop improvement, drug discovery, algal biotechnology, and low-cost diagnostics. She is a Member of the African Academy of Sciences.
