The first 118 nucleotides do not code for a protein, but are essential for recruiting the host ribosome for translation of the viral polyprotein and viral nonstructural protein 5 for genome replication. The viral genome contains a 5' cap and the necessary elements for long range RNA-RNA interactions for genome replication at the 3' end.
