Protoporphyrinogen oxidase
EN
Protoporphyrinogen oxidase conducts the seventh step of the heme pathway. It oxidizes protoporphyrinogen IX to protoporphyrin IX by the removal of six hydrogen atoms. The resulting compound is an oxidized porphyrin, in contrast to the reduced porphyrinogen intermediates formed earlier.
EN
Protoporphyrinogen oxidase mutation in humans is associated with variegate porphyria, leading to increased photosensitivity and neurological symptoms.
