Phytochrome-interacting factor-like 1

HvPIL1 is a basic helix-loop-helix (bHLH) transcription factor involved in the regulation of stem elongation and plant architecture. The protein participates in light-mediated growth responses by regulating the expression of genes involved in cell wall expansion, including expansins. HvPIL1 expression exhibits diurnal variation, reaching maximum levels around midday, and is downregulated under drought conditions. Loss-of-function mutations in HvPIL1 are associated with reduced plant height and reduced lodging.

Additional Information
Genome-edited barley lines carrying either a one base pair insertion (HvPIL1 +1) or a two base pair deletion (HvPIL1 -2) in this gene have been developed using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis. The resulting loss-of-function alleles produce shorter plants with reduced lodging.
