Characteristics of the protein coding sequence
Abnormal cytokinin response 1 repressor 1
EN
HvARE1 is involved in the regulation of nitrogen use efficiency and leaf senescence in barley. Functional studies demonstrated that loss-of-function mutations in HvARE1 improve nitrogen remobilization and utilization, increase chlorophyll retention during grain filling, delay leaf senescence, and enhance agronomic traits including plant height, tiller number, grain protein content and grain yield. HvARE1 is therefore considered a negative regulator of nitrogen use efficiency.

Additional Information
HvARE1 is predominantly expressed in leaves and shoots and is expressed at comparatively low levels in roots under low nitrogen conditions. CRISPR/Cas9-mediated mutagenesis demonstrated that disruption of HvARE1 confers improved performance under limited nitrogen supply, supporting its potential use in breeding for enhanced nitrogen use efficiency.
