Lignin-modified maize (Maize CCR3)

The maize (Zea mays) was genome edited with CRISPR-Cas to introduce a mutation in the endogenous cinnamoyl-CoA reductase 3, which resulted in the inactivation of the gene. Due to the knockout, the maize cells have a reduced lignin composition in their cell wall. This is expected to improve digestibility and thus feed conversion rate for downstream uses and applications.

The genome-edited maize was initially transformed to introduce the genome editing machinery (CRISPR-Cas), which then could induce a mutation in the cinnamoyl-CoA reductase 3 gene. The mutation resulted in a knock-out mutation and non-functional gene product. Subsequent breeding (backcrossing) was performed to remove the genetic elements originally introduced from the vector.
