The Biosafety Guidelines of Bangladesh has been gazetted by the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MOEF) in 2008. National Biosafety Framework (NBF) has also been developed in 2007. The Guidelines for the Assessment of Foods Derived from GE Plants has also been approved by the National Committee of Biosafety (NCB) and awaiting for Gazette notification by the MOEF. Biosafety Rules of Bangladesh has been drafted under the purview of the Envionment Conservation Act 1995 and is under review by the Ministry of Law and Parliamentary Affairs.

National Committee on Biosafety (NCB) has aproved contained green house trials of Golden rice being performed by the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute (BRRI). Besides Golden Rice, NCB has also approved the contained as well as confined trials of Fruit and Shoot Borer (FSB) resistant Bt-brinjal and Late Blight Resistant (LBR) potato in favour of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI). BARI performed two rounds of confined multilocational trials with Bt-brinjal and LBR potato.

Department of Environment (DoE) in collaboration with Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) has developed the Guidelines for the Assessment of Foods Derived from GE Plants which has been approved by the NCB. The necessary application formats for the importation and marketing of GE materials to be used as food and feed has developed. However, for the detection of GE foods we need to develop the capacity of our scientists as well as the capacity of the laboratories. A Medium Sized Project (MSP) towards Implementation of NBF  has already been submitted to UNEP for GEF approval which has included the items of our needs in this regard.
