The LGL is the central expert body of Bavaria/Germany for food safety, health, animal health, occupational health and safety / product safety. It is the central institute for the official analysis, detection, and quantification of GMOs in food, feed and seed.EN

The Bavarian Health and Food Safety Authority (LGL) is the central expert body of Bavaria/Germany for food safety, health, animal health, occupational health and safety / product safety. It is the central institute for the official analysis, detection, and quantification of GMOs in food, feed and seed.
Goals and Tasks:
- Anticipating, assessing and responding to public health risks
- Encouraging people to adopt healthy lifestyles and behavior
- Informing consumers actively and quickly so as to protect them from deceptive or fraudulent practices
- Conducting application-oriented research in cooperation with universities and other authorities
- Acting as a service provider for the food inspection offices, the public health service, the official veterinary inspection system and the occupational health and safety authorities in Bavaria
Risk assessment:
- Testing of approx. 75,000 samples per year
- Networking with the scientific community
- Preparation of expert reports for both ministries and lower regional governments and authorities
- Interface to risk management bodies (enforcement)
Risk management:
- Bavarian contact office for all notifications under the EU Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed
- “Food Safety Task Force”
Risk communication:
- Information provider for authorities, consumers, associations and the media
- Dissemination of information through its annual report, the Internet, technical publications, press releases, - newsletters and during events
- Answering enquiries under the consumer and environmental information laws
Project and research work:
- Application-oriented research
The LGL analyses:
- food and feed for authenticity and origin, resi-dues and contaminants, health risks, correct labeling and composition
- the animal disease situation and individual cases of animal diseases in Bavaria and elaborates animal protection and animal drug control programs, thus contributing to animal health
- the public health situation in Bavaria, collecting data about health risks and developing prevention and action plans,
- the safety of products, helps to promote health and safety at the workplace and provides the technical foundation for the work of the Labor Inspectorate.
GMOs:
In the frame of offical control the LGL conducts analysis, detection, identification and quantification of GMOs in food, feed and seed.
