Coriander is a tropical crop; it requires a cool and comparatively dry frost-free climate, particularly at flowering and seed formation stages, especially for good-quality and high seed yields. Coriander can grow in a wide range of soils, provided that they are rich in organic matter and well-drained. Saline, alkaline and sandy soils are not suitable for growth.

Coriander is primarily a culinary herb and flavouring agent. Both the seeds and leaves of coriander are commonly used in food and food products. The plant is sometimes also used in home remedies and traditional medicine to promote digestion and to treat gastro-intestinal disorders. 

The essential oils extracted from coriander contain various monoterpene hydrocarbons and oxygenated monoterpenes. The essential oils may have anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties.
