Rice tungro bacilliform virus is one of the two viruses that causes rice tungro disease, which causes leaf discoloration, stunted growth, reduced tiller numbers and sterile/partly filled grains. The virus is transmitted by leafhoppers in the genera Nephotettix and Recilia after they have acquired rice tungro spherical virus (likely functions as a helper virus). The virus infects cultivated rice, wild rice relatives and other grassy weeds commonly found in rice paddies. There is no evidence of seed transmission.

Additional Information
Rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV) is a member of the only species in the genus Tungrovirus. The virion has a bacilliform-shaped (width of 30 nm and a predominant length of 130 nm), which differs from other members of the Caulimoviridae. The virion contains a single molecule of non-covalently closed circular dsDNA of about 8.0 kilobase pairs. The genome has four open reading frames.
