The native range of this species is from Macaronesia (Azores Islands, Madeira Islands, Canary Islands and Capo Verde) to India.
EN
The grass grows primarily in temperate biomes and occurs naturally in oligotrophic (low nutrient) habitats. The species is adaptable to various abiotic stresses (cold, salinity, drought and nutrient deficiency).
The native range of this species is from Macaronesia to India. However, it has been introduced into Japan.

- Research
Brachypodium distachyon is a model annual grass species, used for genetics and development biology research, particularly due to its phylogenetic proximity to cereal crops and bioenergy feedstocks. A broad and diverse set of germplasm, microarrays, robust protocols for transformation and a set of T-DNA insertion lines have been developed.
The genome is predicted to be 272 Mb in size with approximately 25,000 genes. The grass is self-pollinated with little outcrossing during greenhouse surveys.
