Fish
Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is a monophyletic group originated in the Rio Paraguay basin of La Plata river basin.
EN
G. ternetzi is described as a subtropical hardy pelagic fish, living in the middle and upper layers in slow freshwater such as tributaries and floodplain lakes and lagoons with abundant aquatic vegetation. It persists in waters ranging 20 and 26°C (needs a temperature of ≥24 °C to reproduce) with a pH range between 6.0 and 8.0, moderate to hard water hardness (dH between 5 and 19), and carbonate hardness between 4 and 8.
Black tetra occurs in South America from the Paraguay (La Plata) to Argentina and the Amazon Guaporé drainage in Brazil, Bolivia and Peru.
EN
- Ornamental
- Gymnocorymbus ternetzi is an omnivore, but feeds mainly on worms, small crustaceans and insects;
- The species is a schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least 5 or 6;
- A complete mitochondrial genome of G. ternetzi has been reported to be 17,999 bp in length;
- During the domestication of tetra, the albino black skirt tetra or white tetra variant arose and showed decreased pigmentation.
