Komagataella phaffii is a non-pathogenic, obligate aerobic budding yeast. As a methylotrophic species, it can grow on methanol as its sole carbon and energy source.
It was originally isolated from tree exudates in North America.

- The genus Komagataella was first established in 1995 to reclassify Pichia pastoris based on marker gene sequence divergence. Strains previously known as Pichia pastoris were reassigned mainly to Komagataella pastoris and Komagataella phaffii
- The widely studied wild-type strain of Pichia pastoris, CBS7435, is now classified as Komagataella phaffii.
- Although the updated taxonomy is widely accepted, the name Pichia pastoris remains commonly used in the context of recombinant protein production.
