Neotropical region, with primary centres in Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, extending into northern South America.
The genus Adiantum shows high diversity in tropical regions, with many species concentrated in the Neotropics and Andes, supporting this region as a diversification centre.
Typically found in tropical and subtropical moist forests, often in shaded environments with high humidity. Grows terrestrially, commonly along forest floors, slopes, and near watercourses. Prefers well-drained soils rich in organic matter; occasionally found on rocky substrates.
Widely distributed from southern Mexico through Central America to Brazil and northern Argentina, including parts of the Caribbean.
