Viruses
Originally isolated from Streptomyces bacteria; exact geographic origin of the type isolate is not consistently reported in taxonomic databases.
Not established. Diversity is associated with bacteriophage populations infecting Streptomyces species.
Lomovskayavirus C31 is a temperate bacteriophage infecting bacteria of the genus Streptomyces. Its potential habitat is therefore associated with environments supporting susceptible Streptomyces populations. Such bacteria are widespread in terrestrial environments, particularly soils and decomposing organic matter. φC31 has been reported to exhibit relatively broad host specificity among Streptomyces species, although not among other actinomycetes. Specific information on the natural environmental occurrence and habitat range of L. C31 is limited.
The natural geographical distribution of Lomovskayavirus C31 has not been well characterized. Its hosts, bacteria belonging to the genus Streptomyces, are widely distributed in terrestrial environments worldwide, suggesting that suitable habitats for related Streptomyces bacteriophages may be geographically widespread. However, available information does not demonstrate a corresponding global distribution of Lomovskayavirus C31 itself. The geographical origin of the reference φC31 isolate is reported as unknown.
Lomovskayavirus C31 is a bacteriophage that infects Streptomyces bacteria. There is no evidence that the virus infects or causes disease in humans, animals or plants.
