EH913 corn was developed through transformation genetics via Agrobacterium tumefaciens, with the pEH001 plasmid containing the pTF101.1 plasmid backbone, and the T-DNA (transfer DNA) composed of the gene expression cassettes of the truncated Cry1Da protein and the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase (PAT) protein.
corn EH913 does not have the potential to harm health human or animal, being as safe as its conventional counterpart.
A detailed study on the possible impacts of EH913 on non-target organisms was conducted in 7 different representative locations of corn cultivation in Brazil during the 2020-2021 harvest. Field collection methods (pitfall traps and sticky cards e) and visual inspections of arthropods in the EH913 and conventional counterpart plots were conducted at four main stages of maize development. A large number of arthropod species were recorded (134 species), orders (14) and trophic guilds (9), and comparatively evaluated. Statistical analysis showed that EH913 did not cause reproducible or biologically significant adverse effects in any non-target arthropod species, and no non-target indicator species of the technology was identified that would warrant further studies.
Event EH913 is not potentially causing significant environmental degradation or human/animal health.
Agronomic and phenotypic characteristics of EH913 and its conventional comparator L85 x L3. This evaluation included the comparison of parameters such as: seed germination and seedling vigor, initial and final stand, days for pollination, plant height, ear height and grain data. In addition to these aspects, the response to biotic and abiotic stressors was evaluated and there was no evidence of biologically significant differences between EH913 and its conventional comparator. The evaluation of pollen grain morphology and viability showed that there is no difference between EH913 pollen and its conventional counterpart; The voluntary potential of the grains was evaluated using the grains from the field studies, and after an evaluation carried out in a greenhouse, it was observed that the event EH913 does not have any adaptive advantage that could favor the harmful potential of the plants.
Results of the evaluation of agronomic characteristics of EH913 phenotypes demonstrate that the genetic transformation of the plant did not cause any undesired impact on its typical characteristics of corn. The evaluation was conducted at seven representative corn production sites in Brazil and demonstrated the agronomic and phenotypic equivalence, including reproductive traits, of EH913 when compared to its conventional L3 x L85 counterpart and nine conventional commercial varieties.
Established the safety of event EH913 corn for human and animal food and for the environment. As well as studies carried out for several proteins of the Cry1 and PAT family already used in genetically modified crops, the results demonstrate that EH913 corn is substantially equivalent to conventional corn and presents negligible risk when consumed by humans or animals, and when cultivated under conditions of use in the environment.
Within the scope of the powers of art. 14 d, as well as the internationally accepted criteria for evaluating the safety of food and genetically modified raw materials, it is considered that the biosafety data of the EH913 event meet the relevant standards and legislation that aim to guarantee the biosecurity of the environment, agriculture, human and animal health.
