Potato modified for altered starch composition| AVEBE | Changes in quality and/or metabolite content (Amylose and amylopectin ratio), Reduced amylose in starch content
- SNIF B/NL/04/04 [ English ]
EN
Potato has no wild relatives in Northwest Europe, outcrossing to those relatives is therefore irrelevant. Due to the combination of the climatic conditions in Northwest Europe and the Good Agricultural Practice potato is biologically contained.

EN
The risk on any adverse effect is considered to be negligible.

The field trials will be conducted in the northeast part of the Netherlands. Under these conditions potato is biologically contained.
In this region commercial cultivation of (starch) potatoes occurs also.

In this region commercial cultivation of (starch) potatoes occurs also.
No specific validated detection method available.

Similar plants with the same new trait have been evaluated extensively in previous field experiments. The experiments did not reveal an altered sensitivity for frost for both the genetically modifiied plants and the amylose-free mutants. It is therefore not likely that the genetic modification will result in an altered frost sensitivity.
The GMP's do not contain any other introduced gene. The potential impact will therefore be limited to the trait of an altered carbohydrate composition. Other potential impacts on the environment are therefore considered to be extreme unlikely.
The purpose of the field trials is field testing, propagation and multiplication of the transgenic potatoes.
An English summary of the notification including the risk assessment is available at the EU WebSNIF website EC-JRC GMO Register under notification numbers B/NL/03/04 and B/NL/04/04.
