Possible gene transfer through cross-pollination with wild aspens and hybrids of Populus alba. Spread of gm aspen through root sprouts outside of the trial site.

Management strategies include: Inspection of the gm aspens for possible building of flower buds every 14 days from the middle of February until two months after leaves have opened. An area of 10 m around the trial is to be kept free of vegetation. WIld growing aspens are to be removed in the area 50 m from the trial. The area 50 m from the trial are to be visually inspected for possible root sprouts for a minimum of Three years after the conclusion of the field trial. Should a root sprout be discovered, the inspection shall continue for another two years.

This field trial includes genetically modified aspen with modification of 21 different genes (28 different Constructions). It is a continuation of field trials begun in 2012 (see B/SE/12/2655).

Våxholm in Southern Sweden and possibly near Umeå in northern Sweden. Våxtorp is located north of the Halland’s Esker and is flat and homogenous. It is situated on clacial alluvium consisting of a relatively large layer of sand with some gravel. The average temperatur during the vegetation period is about 15oC and precipitation is about 800 mm. The vegetation period is about 210 days. Because the ground in question has been used for production of forest plants, the gound has been cultivated intensively. Vegetation has been kept from growing, which means that fauna and flora in the near vicinity of the trial is very poor. Even the soil ecosystem is probably poor. Outside the plant nursery it is predominantly an agricultural landscape, but tthere is also a small forest area with deciduous trees, both biotopes with tpical vegetation and animal species.
