As a scientific officer in the German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety I am working in the department of Genetic Engineering and for the secretariat of the German Central Committee for Biological Safety (ZKBS). As such, I am responsible for the surveillance of the field of synthetic biology. Since November 2013, I have visited several scientific conferences on the subject, and extensively studied the scientific literature in the field to ensure whether techniques used in synthetic biology and the resulting organisms can be considered as LMO according to EU directive 2009/41/EC. Currently, I am working on a review on synthetic biology to be published by the ZKBS.

I am in charge of the surveillance of synthetic biology and the related techniques. As a member of the secretariat of the Central Committee on Biological Safety (ZKBS) I monitor whether techniques and organisms resulting from synthetic biology are within the scope of directive 2009/41/EC and its definition of genetic modification. As such, I am assigned to informing the ZKBS about synthetic biology and to writing a review on synthetic biology techniques and organisms and their implications on genetic engineering regulations. Since 2015, I have followed the discussions on Synthetic Biology under the CBD, participated in online fora and attended COP 13 and 14 as part of the German delegation.

As a Ph.D. student I studied the avian herpesvirus Marek´s disease virus. In particular, I studied the expression and function of viral gene ICP27 and viral microRNA mdv1-miR-M7-5p. Besides basic research and publication of results, I trained students and participated in scientific conferences.
