Welcome! [#981]
Dear Participants,

Welcome to the discussion group on “Possible gaps – objective of the Protocol, types of LMOs, segregation and traceability, thresholds”. You are invited to submit your responses to the guiding questions above, to post additional questions you may have and to respond to the comments of others.

As outlined in the background document, a number of organizations such as the OIE and the Codex Alimentarius Commission are undertaking work on the traceability of shipments of goods – goods that could, in many instances, include living modified organisms. Participants may wish to discuss how this work is related to the scope and objective of the Protocol and Article 18 in particular as well as how stakeholders in the Protocol and the Secretariat can contribute to this work.

Discussion of specific gaps in existing standards is encouraged rather than general comments. Or, conversely, if there are no gaps, specific evidence that this is the case would be very valuable.

As a participant in this Online Forum on Standards for LMO Shipments, your contributions are very important in making the Forum a success by generating substantive information that can help Parties take an appropriate decision on the matter at their next meeting in October 2010.

The CBD Secretariat thanks you for your active participation. Happy discussions!

Best regards,
The Biosafety Team
