Potato plans were modified to constitutively express 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate phosphatase (DOGR1) gene from Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

The function of the DOGR1 is the dephosphorylation of 2-deoxyglucose-6-phosphate in the transformed plant cells, therefore inhibiting its competitiveness with glucose-6-phosphate, which would cause cell death through the inhibition of glycolysis, protein synthesis, cell wall polysaccharide synthesis and also protein glycosylation.

Therefore, as a result of the genetic modification, the plant cells are tolerant to 2-deoxyglucose in the growth medium.
