These guidelines set out the requirements for labeling genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their derived products that have been approved for environmental release, imports or placing on the market. Their objective is to ensure compliance with the Biosafety Act and Biosafety (Labeling) Regulations while promoting safety assurance, consumer rights, traceability, transparency, and public trust. Mandatory labeling requires all approved GMOs and their derived products, whether pre-packaged or not, to display a graphic statement indicating “Contains Approved GMO,” and to clearly indicate any significant differences from conventional counterparts in composition, nutritional value, or intended use. However, exemptions apply to products with inadvertent GM presence below 1%, highly processed foods (unless composition or use is altered), certain processing aids and additives with no detectable novel DNA above 1%, animal products from animals fed on GM feed or vaccinated with GM vaccines, foods fermented using GM microorganisms no longer present in the final product, and foods prepared for immediate consumption in catering or similar establishments.
