Potato plants were modified to constitutively express gibberellin 2-beta-dioxygenase from Arabidopsis thaliana, which codes for an enzyme that metabolizes intermediary compounds in the gibberellin biosynthesis pathway leading to the degradation of active gibberellin.
The constitutive expression of the gibberellin 2-beta-dioxygenase leads to the production of biologically inactive gibberellins in the genetically modified potato plants leading to the formation of plants that are characterized by a considerable growth retardation.
