A fragment of the gene coding for the amino acid permease 2 from Solanum tuberosum, which is expressed predominantly in stems, is constitutively expressed in an antisense orientation in the transgenic potato plants.
As a result of the genetic modification, the production of endogenous amino acid permease is inhibited thereby leading to a reduction in amino acid transport to the tubers and, consequently, resulting in a reduction in the content of soluble nitrogen compounds in the tubers.
Even though some anti-AAP2 lines demonstrate a significant reduction in StAAP2 mRNA in the stems, they do not show any changes in regard to the Nitrogen/Carbon ratio, amino acid composition or the carbohydrate content in the tubers.

The term “Recipient organism” refers to an organism (either already modified or non-modified) that was subjected to genetic modification, whereas “Parental organisms” refers to those that were involved in cross breeding or cell fusion.
